Engineering Staffing Plan
As a director of human resources for a mid-size engineering and manufacturing firm, it is extremely important to create comprehensive staffing plans. Now that the company has just signed a Federal contract requiring the recruitment of 20 new engineers who are bilingual. In order to achieve this, the VP of HR has requested a plan. This plan must consist of strategies to recruit, hire, and provide onboarding activities for those 20 vacant engineer positions. Keeping up with the latest trends and developments must be considered to recruit and select high performing qualified engineers. This paper is a discussion regarding a plan that will effectively meet the organization’s needs related to locating, attracting, hiring, and onboarding personnel.
BACKGROUND
As a former recruiter and a current director, I am well aware it can be difficult to find the talent needed to fill certain professional positions even with a high unemployment rate. With the skills needed to fill these types of positions in today’s innovative and changing environment, a plan is needed to find them. According to a poll by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), more than one-half of organizations are finding it very difficult to find skilled workers for certain positions and those in the engineering, medical, technical, and executive positions even more difficult to fill (SHRM Poll: Skills Gap Makes Engineering, Medical and Technical Jobs Difficult to Fill, 2011).
RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Creating a plan and describing the roles and all those involved assists everyone in understanding the details and work that goes into the process.
