Chapter 13 Paper

The article is titled “Get Yourself Some Executive Charisma” by Debra Benton. The article gives four specific items or area that one can work on to help them develop Charismatic leadership skills. First ‘Civil and Aware’, “Executive charisma is the ability to gain effective responses from others by using aware actions and considerate civility in order to get useful things done.” (Benton) Second, “It’s Up To You”, The article gives two ways, one, you have to believe that you were born with more personal appeal than you think. Next, it is up to you to uncover your charisma. The Third area of improvement or learning is ‘The Physical dimension’. Stand tall and straight, smile, look confident. Use aware actions: a) deal with others as human to human, b) use good natured humoring to break barriers, c) slow down your talk, walk, and movement, d) shut up and listen, e) ask questions as the main communication tool, f) reach out and touch both literally and physically. The last area: ‘Like the Golden Rule’. Have considerate civility. Help others feel good about themselves when they are around you. Finally the author states that you should work on your executive charisma until the day you retire.

The text chapter 13 is about issues in leadership, on page 413 there is a section specifically on charismatic leadership. The section defines what charismatic leadership is and some of the history behind how it became recognized in the business leadership community. The next part of the section is titled ‘Are Charismatic Leaders Born of Made?’, the article is about using the characteristics one is born with and learning you to improve them or develop them into usable skills. The text states yes to this question, Charismatic leaders are both born and made. The article gave 4 areas to work on to develop charismatic skills and the text gives a three-step approach to develop some of these skills. The three steps are: a) an individual needs to develop an aura of charisma by maintaining an optimistic view; using passion to generate enthusiasm; and communicate with the whole body not just works, b) draw others in by creating a bond that inspires
