Good leadership is key for leading organizations successfully through transitions and implementation of new processes. Leadership is also about both the management of information and the management of motivation. On the information side, it is critical to open up that channel of communication quickly and enable the flow of information which will allow you to share the experience, expertise and perspectives of those around you and it also increases the probability of getting your hands on the critical piece of information that somebody has and is needed to make the right decision. On the motivation side, Inclusiveness is going to create a sense of ownership, buy-in and an effective foundation for a successful implementation. The sense of ownership and partnership you create when you are inclusive is also going to keep people bought in and excited about the prospect of implementing the decisions that are reached. So it is very critical for leaders to open up communication channels early and often keep tapping into the reservoir of information.
The ability to successfully implement a decision is a function of how the decision is made for three reasons.
• First, a more inclusive approach gives you access to better information, and thus makes it likely that you will make a better decision (i.e., a decision that is more likely to solve the problem). In fact, a more inclusive approach is more likely to identify the right problem to solve!
• Second, a more inclusive approach gives you the opportunity to find a solution that does more to address everyone’s underlying interests
