Introduction
Hotspeck Minerals is an isolated company that consists most of men miners. Naomi, a graduated student from MIT, was so desperately desired to find a job that she responded to an ad posted by Hotspeck. Fortunately, Naomi got an interview from Louise, an employee relation clerk, and she went to interview. Although the final position was the secretary, rather than her desired administrative staff, Naomi still worked hard and tried to get promotion. However, she did not fit in with this company and her value was so different from others that others put arrogant label on her. She tried to discuss this problem with the new VP for Human Resource, Mr. Peter Evans, but he was gone abruptly. Finally, when her boss, Mr. Jordan, hired a beautiful women, Gretchen Steubbins, for the position that Naomi wanted, Naomi went exploded and expressed her anger as her profile showed that her qualifications were much more suitable for the position. But Mr. Jordan believed that she did not like the company and fired her.
Based on what I have observed above, I decide to apply different theories to examine what happened at Hotspeck. MARS model, which described how motivation, ability, role perceptions and situational factors affect individual behaviors, can help me analyze individual differences. Under the motivation, individual can be different from their personalities, which I will analyze by five-factor model of personality, and their values. Moreover, how individual perceive others and themselves also contribute to this case result. Finally, I will use the attribution theory to figure out who is more responsible.
Naomi-the graduate of MIT
Naomi is a person with high conscientiousness, which indicated she would be more goal-focused, organized and disciplined. As from the case, she really focused on her work and got prepared for working each day. Naomi graduated from MIT, and this famous university gives her a high self-enhancement, which enhances her belief that she is above average people. Her reaction with the decision that Jordan chose to hire Gretchen, a sorority girl from an unknown college, approves that Naomi did not believe Gretchen has the ability to do a better job than her. When she was told that she has opportunity to get promotion, she worked hard and got outstanding performance. According to MARS model, Naomi is motivated by promotion chance. She certainly has the ability to do the work and she fully understands her role since the job is boring as described in the case. Her outstanding performance in three-month and six-month point indicated that she is a task performance, a goal-directed behavior, in this organization.
