The history of I.B.M goes back to when before computers were developed. It originally started out as a Tabulating Machine Company which was founded in 1896 by Herman Hollerthin. This company specialized in developing punched card data processing equiptment. It began as a means for Hollerthin to meet the demands in tabulating the 1880 census. Pumch cards introduced in 1896 laid the foundation for years of equiptment that would one day be known as I.B.M .

The business was then sold to Charles Flint. This happened in 1911 for 2.3 million dollars. That he recieved 1.2 million dollars to begin "Computibg Tabulating Recording Corperation" also known as "CRT". The incorperation took place on June 16,1911, in Endicott, New York. These three companies were merged. Mr. Flint was the financer behind the merger and he stayed a member until 1930. Then in 1914 Thomas J. Watson Sr. became general manager of CTR. In 1917 CTR entered the Canadian market usuing the new name International Business Machines Co., Mr. Watson played a big role and key in establishing what was later on known as IBM.

In around 1928, IBM introduced a new 80 column punched card. This became the standard IB card used by tabulators and computers for many years to come. Then later in the 1950's IBM became the primaty contractor in developing computers for the Uniter States Aur Force automated defense systems. While IBM was working on the SAGE interceptor system IBM got new information to work being performed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This information greatened advancements for the company by learning information on digital data transition.
