Assignment Two

This assignment is designed to make you aware of the big wide world around you and its influence on international business. Unlike Assignment One, this time you focus on a particular real company, and write a report on how the company deals with the dynamic international business environment which affects the company’s success and failure. Key to the report is that you must identify the ‘case(s)’ that the focal company has experienced whilst operating in foreign markets. Examples include Facebook’s clash with the Chinese government regarding internet censorship, which induced the company’s withdrawal from the country. Apple was accused of outsourcing production to sweatshops in developing countries. Likewise, technology-companies such as Nokia and Blackberry failed in global competition due to their inability to handle the competitive technological environment. Of course, you are also encouraged to focus on successful cases, or companies that are successful in dealing with the international business environment.

Remember the company/case needs to be well-researched, and the assignment should be more than just a reproduction of secondary materials. Your task is to, based on the materials, identify what are the key factors are in the international business environment, which contribute to the success and failure of the focal company. You must pay attention to the company’s approaches to address the issues and problems arising from the international business environment, evaluate these approaches as well as provide your reasoning. Equally important, based on the focal company, you need to offer recommendations for other firms, detailing, what can they learn from it if in a similar situation?
