Abstract

For every research project there are three very different and unique aspects that researchers have to try to address before they can collect and process their data.  The first task that researchers have to accomplish is to determine how they will select their participants.  Once they decide how they are going to choose them, they need to get enough potential participants to respond back that they are going to complete the survey prior to the set deadline.  The next step they need to cover is the instrument, or survey itself.  The researchers need to create a survey that is easily distributed to all of the respondents and does not have any assumptions included in it that could skew the results.  The last step in the process that need to be dealt with are the procedures of the survey administration.  Researchers need to clearly decide what is the best way for the instrument to be delivered with the least amount of threats to reliability, as well as the roles of both the researchers and the participants in the entire process.  After all of those steps are completed, the researchers can take their results and begin to calculate them to see if they prove their hypothesis.

Introduction

When it came to looking at the survey and research that I was doing on increased employee turnover, it quickly became apparent that there are aspects about the study that have to be considered before administering the survey.  Those items have the potential to either set the study on the path to success, or on the path to failure depending on whether or not they are accounted for appropriately.  The first thing to consider, are the participants themselves.  This means that the population that will be surveyed needs to include people from different areas of society, they will be sampled randomly, and the ideal size for a real study of this nature would be 2000-5000 people across the nation.  The next aspect that will be looked at is the instrument, or short question survey, that will be used to gather responses and information from participants.  The information that they give will enable the researchers to determine what the causes of increased employee turnover really are.  The last aspect to consider for this, and any other study, are the procedures of the survey.  This includes the components of how will the survey be delivered to respondents, what threats to reliability there are, and the roles of the researcher and the participants.  After all of those different aspects are covered, then the actual information collection process can begin.
