Leadership – 1 page
Definition; Theory
Various definitions for leadership has been proposed and most appear to be used for a specific purpose, in this context leadership can be seen as Cole (2004) cited in Milpark HCM 2010, says that leadership can be seen as a dynamic process, which implies that there is ‘no one best way' of leading – leadership is essentially about striking the right balance between the needs of the people, tasks and goals in a given situation
Application
This definition implies that the three elements namely; needs of the people, tasks and goals have a dynamic relationship in which one affect the other. If the goals must be achieved, certain tasks have to be performed by the people who have specific needs. Leadership can then be considered to be the change agent through which these elements have a relationship; it is therefore not unreasonable to say that if the relationship is good, sustained competitive advantage of the organisation can be assured.
