Malaysia's mamak stall is famous for being one of a few eateries that operate 24 hours. It is a place where Malaysians gather for food and to hangout. Recently a proposal was submitted to the government to restrict operating hours to midnight (Carvalho, 2015). It is clear that mamak stalls should not be restricted to midnight.
Firstly, people will have to spend more money for food. For instance, the operator's income will be affected, leading to an increase in the price of food to cover the high rentals. This will deprive the people, especially those with lower income for cheap foods as other 24-hour restaurants are usually very expensive.
Secondly, Malaysia will lose a popular spot for tourist to hangout. This is because mamak stalls indirectly promote tourism as it is not only a one stop food center, but also a place for tourist to mingle with the locals. Hence, Malaysia will then lose a lifestyle and identity that is uniquely Malaysian.
Some people argue that having 24-hour eateries have contributed to many social problems. However, the problem comes from individuals and it can happen anywhere, regardless of the place. Therefore, the business should not be put to fault. Moreover, closing down mamak stalls will only lead people to find alternative places such as night clubs to hang out.
In conclusion, mamak stalls should not be restricted to midnight as people need to fork out more money for food and Malaysian's will lose an identity that is unique to foreigners.
