Masters of Business: Mario Gabelli
Mario Gabelli is about value investing much like Warren Buffet, he learns all about an industry before he begins to invest in an industry or a particular stock. He formed a company in the midst of the bear market in the 1970’s and when on to manage billons in assets. He invests in stocks like he is investing in the entire company. He graduated from Fordham in the 60’s and then went on to Columbia, he held a number of odd jobs before going to college. He even ran some dances for college students when they held formal events. He never held a finance position before attending college. He graduated as a student from accounting and then worked in finance internships in many of the television firms like ABC. He ended up having loans from graduate school even though he didn’t want to. One of his main philosophies that rules change but the people that implement the rules do not change and when somebody wants to run a company they have to be aware of GAAP accounting. The manager at the top of the firm is very important as that can make or break a firm if they are to be successful. He relies deeply on his research team but also is self-aware of his own investments. He is very proud of his team and the deep diving research that they do. His people look for ideas and follow industries that they like. They look far down the road in entire industries in order to maximize their investment. Mario says that Tokyo, Houston, Hong Kong, and Singapore are all generating massive economic activity. Some of his biggest mentors was his professor was Amen Kelley he was the guy that taught him the fundamentals of banking. He reads a lot of annual reports instead of reading books. He spends his free time reading trade magazines in order to learn the most he can about entire industries that he may want to invest in.
