It was the first FDA approved drug meant for the moderately obese. These drug was a low dose formulation which would not have any side effects. The clinical trials were mostly positive with people losing a regular amount of weight without much side effects which allowed the test subjects to have better emotional and healthier eating habits.
The marketing manager knew about the threats of failures and it would be due to the poor positioning of the drug. It would have to be successful with the initial trial customers who would use it for the purpose of treatment or else it would be a disaster in the company’s history. He has to design optimal segmentation, targeting and positioning of the drug.
