INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA STUDIES

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An introductory survey course focusing on visual media culture from a media literacy perspective. The course will cover aesthetics, politics and narrative in visual media (including television, with its antecedents in radio) and perhaps most importantly issues of culture, power and identity. In addition, the course will focus on “emergent media”—a term that encompasses the Internet, social media, smart phones and video games.

TEXTBOOKS:

There is no textbook for this class. Powerpoints will be distributed via ELC. Exams will be based on the powerpoints,  in-class visual material (films, videos etc), class discussion and any other materials identified in class (details to be provided in class).  

EVALUATION:

 Four exams, each worth 25 percent. Exam format: 40-50 questions.

All questions will be TRUE or FALSE.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION (read all closely):        

  1. This course will follow a lecture and discussion format with lots of visual material. The exams will reflect this—they will consist of questions from the textbooks, power points, videos, discussion of media, material provided by speakers and any other material identified in class . In other words, attendance in every class is required.
  2. This is an unconventional but VERY organized class. Attend every class.
  3. Makeup exams will be ONLY given to students that have missed the original     exam for ANY reason. The make-up exams will be given on the last week of class. There is NO midterm OR final for this class.
  4. PowerPoint’s will be posted on ELC.
  5. There are NO extra credit assignments.
  6. Prof. Kavoori is NOT offering honors option.
  7. Prof. Kavoori does NOT “curve” the grade at the end.
  8. Prof. Kavoori does NOT round up or down
  9. Note takers will be assigned. Note takers can be used by any student needing help with notes. Disability students and Athletes please turn in your paperwork to the TA, Mr. Jay Lim.
  10. No video or audio recording is allowed in class. You may use the note taker.
  11. All questions relating to ELC should be addressed to the Mr. Jay Lim, the TA. He is solely responsible for logistics: uploading grades, responding to student questions on ELC, uploading powerpoints and any other issues dealing with ELC. Dr. Kavoori can be contacted (akavoori@yahoo.com) for all curricular and content related matters (for example, concerns about exam questions, clarifications about powerpoints, and any other curricular matters). If you need to ask Dr. Kavoori something email him directly (akavoori@yahoo.com). Only Mr. Lim will be responding to your questions on ELC.
