The organization:
The company is a global technology company specializing in office imaging equipment, production print solutions, document management systems and IT services. Headquartered in Tokyo, this Group operates in about 200 countries and regions. The corporate office of the company is situated in New Delhi. The programme manager is located at the corporate office of the company.
JOB ANALYSIS
Decisions
The printing department is responsible for reducing the hidden and visible printing costs by understanding and analyzing the current set up and then proposing a solution which will increase the efficiency and productivity and reduce operational costs.
He decides the members of each programme’s project and what should be the necessary resources required for it. He has to ensure that the deadline for the project should meet in a timely fashion. He is the mediator between executives and other staff members. He is incharge of planning, implementing and executing specific company goals or policies. He is responsible for monitoring budgets, managing programme’s team members, maintaining overall integrity and coherence of the program. he decides what should be the organizations’ standards and to oversee the development of tools and systems to effectively and efficiently manage projects.
Complexity
The program manager has oversight of the purpose and status of the projects in a program and can use this oversight to support project-level activity to ensure the program goals are met by providing a decision-making capacity that cannot be achieved at project level. So a major challenge is to ensure the disciplined application of standard practices and procedures across linked projects that all relate to one organizational program. These challenges involve understanding the perspectives of various groups and meeting diverse and sometimes contradictory needs at a level beyond that of a project manager. Complexity also lies in making project teams and to allocate work accordingly. Return on investment and value delivery is also one of the challenges faced by him since it is two very important aspects for company’s as well as for customers’ benefit.
Knowledge and skills
The programme manager should have effective leadership, interpersonal and communication skills. The ability to command respect and to create a sense of community amongst the members of the project teams. Good knowledge about techniques for planning, monitoring and controlling programmes. Sound business case development and approvals skills. Good understanding of the procurement process including negotiation with third parties. Good knowledge of programme and project management methods including MSP and PRINCE2. Good knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures. Sufficient seniority and credibility to advise project teams on their projects in relation to the programme. The ability to find ways of solving or pre-empting problems.
