Psychological climate
Psychological climate includes a quality of
an organisation's internal environment
which distinguishes it from other organisations.
This climate results from the
behaviour and policies of members of the
organisation, especially top management,
and is perceived by members of the
organisation.10 An individual's motivation
to work is influenced by organisational
characteristics such as (1) job and role
characteristics, (2) leader behaviour, (3)
the relationship to others with whom they
work, and (4) the overall organisational
structure.11 These four composites of
organisational characteristics constitute the
psychological climate and consist of subscales.
Retail managers, administrative medical
staff and sales personnel have been used
to identify significant job and role characteristics
in the psychological climate.12
These characteristics have also been
examined for their relation to job satisfaction,
individual components of motivation
and motivation. Job characteristics were
found to be related to job satisfaction and
motivation positively while role characteristics
were negatively related to job satisfaction
and motivation.
Leadership characteristics have been
one of the most important determinants
of psychological climate components.
