The purpose of this report is to research the digital economy and its relationship to global entrepreneurship with a focus on Vietnam.
The digital economy is going through rapid growth with almost half of the global population having access to the internet, driving e-commerce and entrepreneurship. Vietnam has identified the economic importance of the digital economy with government implementing policy to ensure there is adequate and reliable IT infrastructure creating incentives for foreign investment through corporate tax reductions while encouraging entrepreneurs to seek opportunity in the market.
In April this year, Vietnam introduced 4G across the country though due to limited IT infrastructure in non urbanised areas and the need for users to upgrade their sim cards to enable 4G access, 3G is still prevalent throughout the country thus creating some network limitations. With the 5G network becoming globally available sometime in 2020, our findings indicate Vietnam needs to focus on developing the necessary 5G infrastructure and training digital technology professionals in information and communication technology to enable the country to continue to increase the amount of internet users, critical to the success and sustainability of a digital economy.
- •Introduction
Macro Level - Global Overview
There are currently 3.740 billion worldwide internet users as of March 31, 2017, according to Miniwatts Marketing Group accounting for 49.7% of the global population. By 2020, a number of internet users are expected to reach over 4.1 billion, more than half of the global population. .
Internet users and connectivity through network advances and the recent implementation of 4G and in the near future 5G through further development of government and private sector ICT infrastructure projects that will expand the reach of many of the world's population who currently have limited access is also driving strong growth in the number of global digital devices, which from 2015 to 2020 is forecast to grow from 16.3 billion to 26.3 billion networked devices (Cisco 2016). Another significant advantage of 5G is how it will benefit disaster relief efforts most noticeably through the ability to connect using wireless communication technologies from device to device. In disaster areas with the current 3G and even 4G technology, are often inoperable, the addition of 5G will have an immediate impact on disaster management issues.
