Slavery in the Chocolate Industry
1. The systematic ethical issues raised by this case should consider the economic systems because of the decline in cocoa bean prices from 1996 to 2000, farmers turned to slavery to cut down labor cost to solve this situation. Another issue relates to the legal aspect of slavery in the chocolate industry. The corporate ethical issue raised by this case are the middlemen because they are aware of the child slavery labor from the Ivory Coast and they still sell the product to manufacturers. The individual ethical issues raised by this case are the cocoa farmers because it is illegal to use child slavery labor.
2. The bill that Representative Engle and Senator Harkin attempted to enact into a law shows that businesspeople can be ethical and follow through but overall bigger stronger company can argue back and persuade ethical businesspeople to change their decision. For this wrongdoing demonstrates that the world is full of unethical behavior in and out of the system.
3. A company like Hershey should be held accountable for their supply chain and every stage of the manufacturing of their products because they are a globalize company that should know the difference between ethical and unethical behavior happening in their company business therefore should take action of what is right before their reputation falls apart.
Savemart is the company that I have chosen to do my mission statement on. Their mission statement consists of one sentence: “Bringing People Together, Through Our Passion for Food and a Remarkable Shopping Experience.” but in my point of view it is very broad and deep with its meaning. Its mission statement refers to the coffee, the people and the place that differentiate them from their competitors.
