Currently, internet is such a human necessity that must be fulfilled. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and MySpace might be some of the most common website that people accessed when they are online. Those examples are categorized as social media and not the only social media websites. Any website that invites people to interact with the site and with other visitors falls into types of social media. Social media is also known as Web 2.0.
There are plenty definition of social media. In a simple word, we can define its meaning through break it down. Media is an instrument on communication. Thus, social media would be a social instrument of communication. Jones (2009) stated that social media essentially is a category of online media where people are talking, participating, sharing, networking, and bookmarking online.
This essay has looked at the issue of the role of social media as a communication tool and found that its role embraces wide aspects of human life such as, social media in general function, social media in business and medical sector which are mainly discussed on this essay.
In conclusion, social media is a two-way communication tool via online that allows the user to interact with the sites and other users. As general function, social media play a crucial role to simplify the way people communicate with others, get the distance closer, let people sharing and expressing their ideas and opinions with affordable price. Today’s social media is also taking an important role in business whereas the company could get consumer’s feedback to improve their business as well as brand awareness of its products and services. Surprisingly, social media is also found useful in health communication such as to exchange health-related information among users, health promotion efforts, demonstrate public health programmes and perceive social support and interconnectivity among individuals.
