1.0 Brief introduction

Angus Glen Water is a natural water bottling company based near Kirriemuir, Scotland. They are the sole suppliers of natural and aerated mineral waters to various high end hotel chains throughout the UK. One of their major customers, Ecosse Hotels, want to use Angus Glen Water exclusively in their hotel chains outside the UK. Ecosse Hotels operate in many other countries, however Angus Glen Water do not have the experiences of doing international business, so they have agreed to establish an International Trade Department and appoint a Physical Resource Manager to head this department and solve these problems.

2.0 Explain the tasks of a Physical Distribution Manager

As a Physical Distribution Manager, the first task is solve the glass bottles problem, the signature glass bottle manufacture in Blackburn, Lancashire, England , is running at full capacity and is unable to increase production.So the Organization’s R&D department has identified a glass bottle manufacturer near Milan, Italy, who can supply exactly the same bottles in sufficient quantities and at an attractive cost. The local haulier indicates that they are able to supply transport to and from UK dispatch and collection points, but are not prepared to run their fleet outside the UK. So how to translate the glass bottles from Italy to UK and form UK to other countries and regions could be one task.

Establish an International Trade Department could be another task, because the company has no experience of trading internationally, if the company want to establish International Trade Department, recruiting new staffs with experiences of doing global trade is needed. Further more, how to structure the International Trade Department is another aspect.

Delegation is the act of passing the responsibility to complete a task to another person. It is important task to a manager. If the manager want to make a successful delegation, he should define the task and select individuals to do this. Assess ability and training needs and explain the reasons is needed.A manager should support and communicate with subordinates and have feedbacks on results.

Controlling is another important task to a manager. Controlling is the process of monitoring performance to ensure that the correct level of progress is being achieved.

3.0 Explain the structure of International Trade Department

The new International Trade Department include five teams, are respectively human resource team, account team, legal issues team, sales& marketing team, and transport&warehousing team. The human resource team is designed to maximize employee performance in service of their employer’s strategic objectives. The account team controls the budget and cost of operation.
