Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn. Bhd’s (Perodua) story is Malaysia’s second largest automobile manufacturer after national car company Proton Holding Bhd. It was established in 1992. This domestic car maker mandated to produce high quality and affordable compact cars for the Malaysian market. The company did just this and succeeded beyond all expectations.
To date, Perodua has sold more than 1.8 million vehicles in the domestic market. It exports CBU cars to 7 countries worldwide. The shareholders of Perodua are UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd with 38%, MBM Resources Bhd with 20%, Permodalan Nasional Bhd with 10%, and Daihatsu (M) Sdn Bhd with 5%, while engine components are exported to 3 countries, including Japan is Japanese companies with 27%, Daihatsu Motor Japan with 20% and trading house Mitsui group with 7%.
Perodua Auto Corp Sdn Bhd (PASB), the manufacturing department of the group, is controlled by Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd which owns a 40% stake and Mitsui & Co Ltd with 11%, for a combined 51% majority stake. Perodua itself does not manufacture vehicles, but it owns 49% of PASB, the manufacturing department. This has often earned Perodua criticism as it is not deemed a national car because of its Japanese partners holding a majority interest in the manufacturing department. In essence, Perodua controls the domestic distribution department while holding a smaller though still substantial stake in the vehicle manufacturing department. In this of success result almost is much of hard work, perseverance, and dedication to maintaining product quality and superior service levels.
