EHR System Successes and Challenges
In an aim to address the business initiatives for Sentara Healthcare in Virginia region, the implementation of the electronic health records (EHRs) was deemed appropriate. For the initiative to be successful, the initial step was to undertake an assessment of the current practice and goals as well as technical and financial readiness. By having an accurate view of preparedness, it was possible to adopt a plan that addressed the specific needs of the practice. The second step in the practice was planning how to gather information in the assessment phase. This way, it was possible to identify the number of steps that would be involved in developing the appropriate EHR system. In this case, Sentara Healthcare and its medical professionals would use certified EHR technology for them to qualify as highly trained individuals in the program. With these processes, activities, such as training and pilot testing of the initiative would receive widespread recognition in the institution (Wegener & Woodman, 2014).
While implementing the EHR system at Sentara Healthcare in Virginia, a number of challenges became evident. Cost is one of the major areas of concern in implementing the project. EHR systems were expensive. Finding sufficient capital to invest in personnel, infrastructure, support, and training needed to install as well as sustain the EHR system was a barrier for the institution. Furthermore, the institution had to cope with patients as well as providers who opposed EHRs or who get discouraged easily by challenges of cost, technical ability, and usability. To address these challenges, a strategic plan should be developed where the implementation of EHR should comprise of a solid timeline as well as a training and communication plan. A specific budget should also be made to make sure it does not hide associated any, hence ensure that the project is successful (University Alliance, 2015).
