opening statement.
teenagers are not physically or mentally prepared for the consumption of alcohol. there are many long term and short term health factors. teens are not responsible or mature enough. teenage drinking often results in doing embarasing things they would not normally do sober. alcohol does more damage to a growing body then a body that is already fully developed. a study conducted by the university of washington found that people who regularly had five or more drinks in a row starting at the age of 13 are much more likely to be overweight and have high blood pressure by the age of 24 then teens who did not drink. no matter what age a person consumes alcohol they are putting their bodies at risk for damaging their heart, liver, pancreas, brain, stomach. alcohol poising is a huge problem emerging with teen according to cpl lynn tardiff of the moncton pd. extreme sleepiness, unconsciousness, difficulty breathing dangerously low blood sugar, seizures, and even death may result. some people argue that drinking in moderation is good for you and the drinking age should be lowered, however, this is not the case for the average teen because they are not capable of drinking in moderation due to their responsablity levels. because their brains are not fully developed. when teenagers drink their decision making skills are altered. they do and say things they normally wouldn’t do sober. often resulting in doing embassing things they wouldnt normally do. teens who drink are more likely to be sexually active and to have unsafe and unprotected sex. resulting in more pregnancies and STD’s. lowering the drinking age would only be encouraging the detriation of todays youth. the drinking age must remain the same.
