The Chinese economic emergence since two decades gave to china an undeniable part in the international stage. Its interactions and its strategies with towards this position have knew several changes.
Here Thomas J. Christensen is explaining us the evolution, the reasons and the impacts of the chinese Foreign policy this last year.
To explain us the evolution, this author underlined 2 important phases about the Chinese foreign policy changes.
The first period start in 2006 . At this period china made a commitment in global issue and got involved in some cooperation in Northeast Asia , Persian Gulf and Africa. This period shows that China was definitely an important recognized stakeholder, and has to taking part actively and get involved in the international stage.
Then after this period on a positive track , a second phase begun in 2009. A behavior shift has been noticed concerning the Chinese foreign policy. Beijing changed courses concerning some decisions or international supports. Such as a turnaround policy about North Korea . Fear to see his influences falling down on the Korea peninsula, China decided to stand by Kim Jong during several North Korean crises. Beijing also begun to support Iran ; and at the ASEAN Regional Forum , it increase the tensions with the Asian actors in warning the countries who will support US initiatives and help the “ outside power”
This policy changes can be illustrated by several explanations and more exactly by the confidence that china took on the international stage and by some domestic issue.
One of the domestic reasons is the nationalism’s rise and criticism citizen against the US and the “soft” policy against them. Sensible to the public opinion and fear about the nationalism growth, Beijing government take some measures and actions to impressed and reassure the Chinese audience and keep their legitimacy.
In the international plan, one of the trigger was the US disrespect of the China “ core national interest”. After that Beijing decided to act against US interests. Which caused some abrasive reactions in some situation.
But this foreign policy changes create several negatives domestic and international impacts. The government in trying to improve its domestic image by some actions
