The Different Types of Workers

Introduction

The workforce of the 21st century termed as the multi-generational workforce includes a mixture of generations from Traditionalist, Baby boomers, Generation x and Generation Y. Each group has different values, behaviors and expectations. Multi generation signifies the grouping of people within similar age, group born on the same time of history and culture. Ageing population on the other hand, is the people who are seeking retirement, but they are required in the organization as well. The main issue with the ageing population is that they are seeing it difficult to adjust with the multi-generational workforce. Whether it be like technological wise, knowledge wise, personality wise, etc. The aged workforce tends to see multi-generations as un-skillful and they lack the potential of working in the organization. Likewise, the multi-generations also look at the aged population with that manner. This assignment focuses on Multi-generation and ageing population issues and how it can be dealt in a contemporary business environment.

Types of generations –

  • Traditionalist

            This type of generations involves the people born in or before 1922 (Matures). The percent of workforce is 10% and in their perspective towards work termed as “Company loyalty “that is existence in the same organization throughout their career.

  • Baby boomers

           This type of generation involves the people who are born in or after 1946. The percent of workforce involves 44% and the perspective towards work can be termed as “Live to work”. This kind of people believe in putting in face time at office. Women are comparatively more in this category.

  • Generation X

            This type of generation involves the people who are born in or after 1965. The percent of workforce includes 34%. Their attitude towards work is “Work to live” which means, work should not define their lives.

  • Generation Y (Millennia’s)

This type of generation involves people who are born in or after 1981. The percent of workforce includes 12% but they are rapidly increasing. The type of attitude towards work involves “Work my way” which means Devoted to their own careers, not to the companies.

  • Ageing Population

Ageing population is a type of an occurrence when the median age of a country or region rises due to rising life expectancy or decline of birth rates.

  The Effect of the Multigenerational workforce                    

 The two generations who has the most difficult time working together in a firm are the Baby boomers and Millennial’s. Baby boomers think the Generation X and Y are lacking discipline and focus. Whereas Generation X thinks baby boomers as defensive, dogmatic in the way they think, resistant to change, lack in creativity. The other interesting factor is that the generation x sees generation Y as arrogant. Millennial’s see Generation X as they cannot handle diplomatic problems, they are often slow in response. Millennial’s also see baby boomers as resistant to change etc.`
