Introduction
One very important part of maintaining an effective company culture is to periodically measure the strengths and weaknesses of ones culture. One thing that may help you analyze the strengths and weakness of a culture or organization is to compare ones results with the six categories of strengths and health. The culture cycle is another tool one can use to see what the elements of a successful culture are and use that to help you decide what areas your company may be lacking in.
Currently, I work for a healthcare company that treats soft tissue injuries. I am the director/operations manager of this company and have been since last October. This is the company that I used to take the measuring the strength and health of a culture assessment test. I will compare my results to elements of an effective culture in order to analyze how successful my company has been in this area.
Patterns and Themes Related to the Strength and Health of the Organization
Upon completion of the assessment, it was apparent that there were many themes and patterns that arose related to the health and strength of my company’s culture. One pattern that I saw came from the strength of culture. More specifically, it had to do with the mission, shared assumptions, and values.
Upon completion of the Mission, shared assumptions, and values portion of the assessment, it became apparent to me that my organization places very little importance on these things. Within this section, I never scored higher than a 2. This tells me that within my organization the value mission and shared assumptions are very unclear.
Another thing that I noticed was that the areas in which I scored well on were the areas that had to do with either things that I could control, such as the latitude I have to deliver results to clients, and the areas which discuss working with teammates. Another area in which there were very high scores was the policies area. The reason for these high scores is that I am the directing manager at the company and many of the policies come directly from me. Overall, high scores were seen in most areas except for Mission, shared assumptions and values and trust, engagement, and ownership.
