I. Introduction:
Attention Getter: Have you guys heard about Uber or Airbnb before? Almost everyone knows and even uses these two popular companies’ services nowadays. The similarity between Uber and Airbnb is they are both creating sharing economy.
Benefits to Audience: You should listen to my speech because sharing economy is becoming more popular nowadays and it is affecting our daily life. By understanding how the sharing economy works and its impact on us, you may get an idea on how to get involved in the economy and create benefits for yourself, such as earning some extra money.
Thesis: Today, I will talk about the trend of sharing economy in the market.
Preview: In this speech, I will first explain what the sharing economy is, and then I’ll discuss its impact on other traditional business and our taxation.
Transition: First, I’d like to explain the definition of sharing economy and its presence in the world economy contemporarily.
II. Main Point 1: The sharing economy becomes more welcome worldwide in recent years.
- First, let me explain what the sharing economy is.
1. The sharing economy, also called collaborative consumption, is an ecosystem in which people are able to borrow and rent their access to different resources owned by someone else through online communities. (DEF)
2. For example, Uber allows people to share their access to others’ cars for convenient rides; Airbnb allows people to borrow others’ houses for trips and vacations. These different business are all creating sharing economy in the society. (EX)
B. The market of collaborative consumption has increased over past 7 years.
1. The market of sharing economy business grows rapidly.
a. According to the USA Today published in August 2015, the use of Airbnb had grown from only few house listings in San Francisco to over 1.5 million listings in 191 countries in past 7 years. To make this data more countable, there is only 4 countries that don’t have Airbnb service in the whole world. Some famous hotel chains you may know, such as Hilton only provide services in about 90 countries. (AA) (EX)
b. Moreover, according to the Wall Street Journal published in July 2015, Uber company, started with zero investment fund in 2010, gained total investment fund that values 51 billion dollars in 2015. To speak concisely, Facebook had earned this much investment in its seventh year and Uber did it two years faster. (AA) (EX)
c. The rapid growth of different sharing economy business indicates that the market of collaborative consumption has increased over past 7 years with the starting of Airbnb.
