The Sloan Women in Management organization was created to be an inviting and supportive group for all Sloan women. The purpose of this group is to advance the careers of current female Sloan students, work with faculty, administrators, and the greater business community to increase opportunities for women in business.

Sink or SWIM

The organization has been rapidly growing since it was established in the 1980's. The annual conference has become the largest event within SWIM, despite starting only two years before. Sloan Women in Management organized their third annual conference, "Dare to Fail: Taking Risks When It Matters Most". This organized event was vital to objectively taking SWIM off the ground. Their conference sold over 350 tickets and sponsorship funds totaled to 38,000. Everything had been planned accordingly, the only problem was the snow storm about to hit Boston. This ends up being the main problem in this case study.

Alternatives

Realistically, a few alternatives to resolve the problem would be to cancel or postpone the conference. By not doing on of these things, it puts attendees in a dangerous situation that could have potentially compelled lawsuits.

Another alternative, could have been fixed within, by having better communication within the team and executed their roles properly. The team was not properly prepared for unexpected obstacles. Originally, they had a good plan, but with constant set backs, they needed to have been better prepared.
