   Introduction

     UK city of culture is a year’s activity which design a place for a symbol of United Kingdom. That activity is going to make the symbol city’s culture, media, sports become famous. Before the ‘city of culture’ came out, there is a similar activity in Europe. In 2008, Liverpool took the honor of European Capital of Culture, which had significant social and economic benefits. It was in 1983 that European Capital of Culture was first conceived by Melina Mercouri, the Greek Minster of Culture. According to a 2004 study named ‘Palmer Report’, the choice of European Capital of Culture have some benefits on cultural development, the transformation of a city. The UK city of culture is built on the success of Liverpool’s program, and the first holder was Derry-Londonderry in 2013. Hull is the second city that take place “the city of culture” in 2017.

     Achievement

     The UK city of culture is a kind of transformation of European capital of culture. So it is necessary to talk about Liverpool’s success. This paragraph is going to introduce the achievement from the activity likes ‘European capital of culture’. From the ’Palmer report’, the 2008 theme in Liverpool is ‘the world in one world’.A “Lantern Carnival” and over 1000 community based events were held in 2008. Some major infrastructure projects had been established, such as the King’s Dock Arena and the construction of the 4th Grace, a special independent company, the Liverpool Culture Company Ltd. The overall operating budget for Liverpool 2008 was in the region of 85 million Euros.

     Economy

     Economy may be the most important part of city of culture. Hull is not a famous place in UK, comparing with London. That activity aim is to make the city famous. It may have some help on attracting tourists. During the European Capital of Culture 2008, the hotel occupancy rate in Liverpool reached 77%. 26.6% of all visitors were new to the Liverpool. Over 75% of visitors claimed that they came here because of the influence of “European Capital of Culture”.The number of visitors reached 3.3 millions at July 2008.The benefit of economy in 2008 was 800 millions. Besides, there were some good influence on 2013’s city of culture. That accolade had bring 3,000 jobs to the Derry city and development of tourism, and the Derry’s jazz festival had attracted over 30000 people and 300 artists. So it is possible to take some advantages from “city of culture”.Tourism may be improved at first. The temperature in Hull is cool in summer,the average temperature in summer is 13, and it is usually higher than 2 centigrade in the winter. It may suitable for tourists staying in Hull during the hot summer. There are a large number of parks and green spaces in Hull, such as:East Park, Pearson Park and so on. So tourists may have many park to spend their extra time,and there are many things that can deeply attract people from all over the world, not just temperature and park, but also music and night life.
