Vignette 1: Fire Alarm in Bucharest

Q1: Which leadership style did the Engineer expect from his leader?

The engineer describes the managers’ usual behaviour as an autocratic-coercive leadership style by saying that his managers never seem to have a problem by directing and controlling their employees actions and behaviour. Therefore, he expected the local managers to take control of the situation and direct them out of the building immediately.

Q2: Why do you think they failed to use it?

The normally authoritarian managers were clearly expecting the same behaviour from their superior from the head office and placed themselves into the role of submissive subordinates. When the fire alarm went off they expected their leader to handle the disturbance. When the guest from headquarters failed to do so, probably because he expected that the local managers would supervise the unpredictable event, they were unsure on how to handle the situation and waited too long to take action.

Vignette 2: “Michael is an excellent analyst. It’s time for him to become a manager”.

Q1: What leadership style does Michael use?

Michael uses the authority – compliance manager style. He has a great concern for production and little concern for people. He uses his employees as tools which he doesn’t trust completely since he checks all their work afore sending it to management. Furthermore, Michael is a pace-setter; he sets one pace, his, and anyone who can’t keep up with him his left out of most projects, resulting in a huge overload of work for others.

Q2: What would you recommend for his further development?

My recommendations for Michael would be to delegate more tasks, and to distribute them more evenly among his team. Furthermore, Michael should start coaching his employees; become a coaching leader, in order to reach better results instead of doing the work himself.

Vignette 3: Conflict in Prague

Q1: Which leadership style did Manager B want to use

Manager B intends to use an affiliative leadership style in order to bring harmony among the two managers.  He recognizes that the managers are very capable at their job but swamped and therefore stressed and hostile towards each other. Manager B values production and realises that the best way to keep things running is to handle the conflict and create a bond between the two managers.
