Thomas Green: Power, Office Politics, and a Career in Crisis
The Case Facts:
Thomas Green is in danger of being dismissed, 5 months after he was promoted to be Senior Market Specialist. This is mainly due to the issues between him and his boss, the Marketing Director Frank Davis. Another person involved in this case is the Vice President of the division, Shannon McDonald, who promoted Green and has received criticisms of Green from Davis, and now requests Green give perspectives of the situation.
The Issues/Potential Main Problem:
- Green openly challenged Davis in the Budget Plan meeting, and Davis read it as Green’s negativity and lack of enthusiasm, though it was not Green’s responsibility to question Davis’s number.
- “Office Politics”: Green has a different workstyle. Davis prefers data, presentation, models, timely email and schedule; Green continues his personal approach, face to face talking and having information in his head --- the way he used as an account executive.
- Lack of Communication: Green avoids all interactions with Davis and does not meet with McDonald regularly to keep the relationship.
Three Questions or Comments I Want to Make in Class:
- Should we point out potential errors of the boss when it’s not necessarily our responsibility?
- Should we change our own workstyle just for office politics?
- How should Green do to better communicate with Davis?
Additional Information/Relevant Theories & Concepts that May Apply:
- What powers Davis has used to try to get Green out?
- What powers can Green use to change the situation?
