Where Globalization of Education Can Lead Us to?
Thousands of years ago, teachers who taught only noble members in imperial palace would never imagine a scene that not only teenagers but also adults from all stratums in this society can enjoy education resources from all over the world which happens time to time today since 1985, when the conception of “globalization ” was put forward by an economist, Theodore Levitt(1985). Owing to the fact raised by Becker(1964) that globalization of education refers to the worldwide discussions, processes, and institutions affecting local educational practices and policies. The author proposes that the following affects may be brought about or approaching.
First of all, globalization has created more opportunities for students in every age, especially in developing countries, to broaden their horizons. Studying abroad to attain higher academic qualifications is a heated tendency for undergraduates. The number of Chinese students who chose to study abroad achieved 413,900(Stromquist,2003). In addition, with the rapid development of Internet benefitting human beings a great deal, demonstration lessons uploaded by noted universities, such as Harvard University and Oxford, make it possible for individuals to learn advanced knowledge remain within doors. It is not difficult to imagine that those who got hard-earned education would treasure it to requite their nation.
We can see that globalization of education has shortened the distance between any two nations, two universities and two persons(Dale& Robertson,2003 ). Nevertheless, The Globalization of Education also has brought negative impacts. Namely, universities in developing countries are facing dilemma of losing outstanding students and professors. In these years, many excellent students, although they can gain the admission of prestigious domestic universities, would like to choose to study abroad. The decisions of these students were made out of their consideration of a higher quality of education or future lives.
