One word barrier in this instant message conversation is a lack of clarity (explanation becomes obscure and the aim of the communication is lost on the listener). During the instant messaging Brian is treating Karen disrespectfully and impersonally, stating there is something more important than she is at the present time. This is cruel, and only escalates the problem. He could have avoided hostility and hurt feelings by honestly texting the truth and he was sorry, she is important, but he cannot argue with the boss, or cannot not finish the work, whatever the situation might be. It is a gentler and kinder way, and it might have settled things in a more pleasant and understanding position on Karen’s part. For example, Brian’s instant messages “Hey, what’s up?
