Bradford,Mannigham questions (RE-do)     Jack Gallagher

1) Inner city is the area near the CBD associated with social and economic problems. The rural urban fringe is the landscape between the town and the country and also is the transition zone where urban and rural mixes.

2) The characteristics of Manningham are that 60% of the population is Pakistani,20.6% of the population is unemployed with a  average household income of just £21,000 before tax and NI. There is less than 10% of the population that is over 65 years of age and 35% of the households have an income less than £15,000 before tax and NI. 6 % of housing in Manningham is also overcrowded with only 4% of housing in the area being detached.

3) The housing is very cheap in Mannigham, this means that migrants moving from other countries such as south Asia will have a easy time finding cheap accommodation. A lot of Asian migrants moved due to the textile mills in the area as they seek to improve the quality of their lives. Due to the amount of jobs available it was very easy for southern Asians to get a job, now the mills have closed down a lot of the Asians have stayed to work in other jobs that are often hard work for minimum wage.  A lot of local people won’t do these jobs due to the low pay for amount of work, so a lot of Asians complete these jobs as the pay is still a lot more than they would get payed in their home countries.

4) The characteristics of housing in Manningham are that 50.6% are owner occupied however 43% have no amenities, which is either sharing bathroom or having no access to central heating. The percentage for overcrowding is 26%, this means that there is more than 1 person to a room, this doesn’t include the bathroom, kitchen or living room. 96% of the housing are either attached or semi-detached with only 4% of housing being detached.

5) The inner city area Manningham has the lowest household income of an average £21000. The suburban area of idle and thackley has an average income of £40,000 which is well above the district average of £29,000. In idle and thackley 86.8% of the housing is owner occupied, this is 30% more than manningham. The housing in manninghaam is 28.4% rented from the social housing providers. Only 4% of housing is detached, much of the housing is terrace houses due to them being built cheaply for factory workers. In Idle and thackley there is a range of types of housing from terraced housing to cottages to townhouses and flats, with  37.7% of the housing being detached which is more than 30% more than manningham.

6) In an area like manningham with an average household income of just £21,000, the percentage of owner occupied housing is dramatically lower than that of Idle and thackley at £40,000 per year. This low income will reduce the quality of housing available as the government and other private contractors will build poor quality housing due to their being little disposable cash in the area. This means that a lot of people won’t be able to buy their own houses so will rent houses privately or will live in social hosing.
