“float” Case

This quote is interesting because the word “float” makes it seem as though student work is involuntary or effortless in nature, and that students have little regard for the importance of goals and standards. Mike Rose also argues that society, more often than not, overlooks the potential of some students.
Here, Mike Rose is talking about how he has chosen to just go along with the lower level program that he was accidentally put into. Rose is able to establish his credibility throughout his essay through using his own personal experiences. Rose decides that the best thing to do is to blend in, and make the best of the situation.
This statement is said by another of of the students in Rose’s low level class. This statement touches on the stereotypes of certain students bases on the classes that they choose to take, and some flaws within the school system. Finally, this choice to include such vivid language properly illustrates the attitudes of students in lower level classes.
