American Beauty, more like; America watch this movie!
As a teenager in today's society we’ve watched quite a lot of movies. A lot of movies are forgettable; you watch it, and that's it. There's nothing more to talk about, it's just left in the back of your head, and never sees the light. That's not the thing with American Beauty. It might seem like a basic teen movie, but it's nothing like that. With American Beauty you are both entertained, intrigued, your boundaries are tested and there's food to thought.
The movie is about the middle-aged man; Lester Burnham. Lester goes through a midlife crisis and following his bad marriage he falls in love with his daughter’s best friend. Growing up in a small town it is never easy to show your true colors, and that is the case of Lester and his family. Lester’s daughter Jane and his wife Carolyn go through the same kind of identity crisis and (spoiler alert) it ends up in quite the bloodbath.
The movie includes a lot of themes, and usually that can get a bit messy, but they knew exactly how to handle them in this movie. The themes, as we see them, is identity, American culture, love, family and sex and sexuality. These are important themes, and a lot of people are often experiencing troubles inside these themes. With all these themes a lot of feelings in you are revoked. There is also a huge possibility that you will relate to some aspects of the movie. You start feeling with Lester, and question if you really know what you want.
American beauty is from 1999 and at this point the idea of going behind the ‘American dream’ was not really explored yet. Therefore the plot was very original back then. Also the thriller aspect of the movie was very well played, and as a viewer you’re on the edge of your seat at all times of this movie. The idea of having an all-flawed character-list is also a very interesting twist to the plot. If the movie had come out this year we think it would be received way differently. At this point the concept of going behind the front of an all American family is quite used. Also the grunge subculture that Jane and Ricky is a part of is not very recognized anymore. Because of this teenagers might not be that able to see themselves in their storyline anymore. Because this movie came out in the 90’s though it hit a bull’s eye for us.
