Literary canon, ethnic writers, and American literature are all pieces to the American ethnic literature puzzle. A canon can cover a rage of time or place and can also stand the test of time. Ethnic writers are giving a voice to their own cultures but managing to write multiple types of literature. American literature can easily cover the widest amount of cultural topics with multiple opinions due to the American ethnic writers. Whether it be a journey through time or culture, American ethnic literature is your look into the past and present.
Literary Canon
A literary canon is a classification of literature. A canon establishes a collection of important literary works relating to a certain time period or place. Society can often force and/or produce a canon based on what is going on at a certain time or place. Society can also determine the lifespan of popularity for a canon. Many times events around the world happen which can kick start a canon but with the snap of a finger, a new topic or a new area may draw the attention. Scholars, teachers, writers and critics all play a part in the development of a canon. Some canons will go on to become classic as we move forward in the future, and some will fade.
Ethnic Writers
Writers come from all over, some are American, some are French, Italian, Mexican, and so on. Any group of writers from different cultures makes up the world’s ethnic writers. American literature is unique in the way that American’s all came from somewhere else. While some writers may have been born and raised in America, it is only natural that their ancestors immigrated here from somewhere else. This being said, the American culture and American writers are made up of multiple cultures which leaves the genre of American literature unique.
