The passage on women, and the education of women from the “Women’s Supplement”, contained many features that made it into the piece it was - informative and expository. The purpose of the excerpt is to educate the population about the causes and effects and possible suggestions as to why the illiteracy rate of women is higher than that of men. The writer uses language strategies such as: use of examples, vocabulary, and use of statistics, to achieve this purpose. These factors all made the article quite reliable.
Firstly, the purpose of the excerpt is to educate the population about the causes and effects and possible suggestions as to why the illiteracy rate of women is higher than that of men. It is also to show how important education is in determining a woman’s future and to sensitize readers to the fact that education is the only means for women to be freed from the clutches of poverty, illiteracy, repeated childbearing, and other negating factors of society that plague females on a regular basis. The main idea of the essay is that education is a key factor needed for illiteracy, along with other societal issues to be corrected. There is a strong correlation between education and illiteracy.
Secondly, the writer uses language strategies such as: use of examples, vocabulary, and use of statistics to achieve his purpose. The strategies used are based on the way the information was laid out. The writer used examples such as the effects of illiteracy around the world in paragraph four, for Ghana and Indonesia. In addition to that, the writer used non-emotive, academic language to present his points.
