Comparison between American Environmental Writing in Different Age
It has been some time since words such as “Globalization” and “modern technology” became the vogue in the world. With the coming of the computer age, the media today have become the information highway for even international news and happenings to be brought into the living room of the average family in most of the countries. With the advent of home computing system that have made our lives easier in many ways, we are able to take loads of things for granted, which, in turn, might mean that we are loosing a feeling of gratitude for things surrounding us. For example, when I was young like at the age of 14. we had already taken computer for granted, so we made well use of it, but still, some of people did not get to buy a computer. However, now it is natural for most of households to have at least one computer in every household. According to The Huffington Post, “71 percent of U.S. households were wired for the web in 2010, and another 9 percent of the population had ready access somewhere else, like a workplace or library. That left 20 percent without a connection (Fact of The Day).” Moreover, without computer, we, college students, for instance, in English class, cannot accomplish our homework, which shows how our lives, the way we live and lifestyle have changed as the technology has been developing. However, behind this scene, there is something horrible going on. That is, in order to accomplish something, human beings did sacrifice something instead. In this case, we have been destroying or havening bad impact on the environment in an attempt to make our lives easier and easier. American environmental writing came out to throw some doubt on our passion for pursuing convenient life.
When it comes to the effectiveness of American environmental writing, I believe it is definitely effective as one of finer tools that let people, who never get a chance to know the fact behind the attempt to makes lives better that is meant for us, get to know some aspects of importance of preserving nature. One good thing I think about the writing is that they are capable of touching the heart of the readers with using their vivid expression that makes readers imagine easily how valuable nature we are destroying is and how we end up at final when we “accomplish” our goals of destroying nature. I like how they try to make us think that we, human beings, are mere part of nature, that we have no choice but to surrender to nature, and that how stupid we are leaning toward utilization of nature rather than the protection. In March 11, 2011, I was in Japan experiencing that large devastating earthquake that caused large tsunami that washed away many precious lives in there. That made ma aware of how weak we are when we are against nature. I believe human beings are the strongest species on the ground with developed technology and well use of thinking. However, nothing can be against nature, which American environmental writing teaches us well not to commit to attacking against what we’ll never be able to win.
