The digestive system is a huge part of our body that helps us to survive. It helps to give our bodies nutrients and get rid of wastes. The digestive system is a long processes that can last between four and six hours.
The mouth is a major part of the first part of digestion. The teeth break down the food into smaller bites. The salivary glands give off saliva which squirts onto the food to break it up mechanically. The tongue also gives off saliva which helps to break up food and gives our bodies taste.
The stomach is very acidic and allows stomach enzymes to work to kill most of the bacteria in the food. Another enzyme in the stomach is the pepsin digestive enzyme that breaks down proteins in the stomach. As the food leaves the stomach it is chyme and it moves through the pyloric sphincter which repeatedly opens and closes.

The large intestines collect waste, and reabsorbs water, and secretes salts, calcium and digestion. In the large digestion it is the breakdown of all non-digestible material.
