Effective Discussions
To avoid
- Two person exchanges
- Formal debating
- Exchanges which lock members inyo the role of passive observers
We want attentive and engaged discussions where all members are involved

Some people are quiet because they don’t understand the people are saying / Eye contact / Ask them question (non-threatening)
Roadblock 2 : Confusion during the discussion
- Signs: Rambling , change the topic , impartial sentences
- Treatement : Clarify at the beginning of the discussion / Restate the question and subject
Roadblock 3 : Weak questions
- Yes/ no questions
- Ask them what they are thinking
- Rhetorical questions
- You should ask a question , then answer and go deeper and even more and ask another one if necessary
Roadblock 4 : Controversal Questions
- Be respectful, Value their opinions
- Don’t talk about 30 seconds in a row / its too long / Try taking your place but very respectally
- If necessary , state the difference that cant be resolved
Roadblock 5 : Distracting behaviors
Roadblock 6 : Know-it all
- Use eye contact
- Acknowledge, encourage , then discuss of “air time” with problem member
- Impliment time limits with the problem
Roadblock 7 : Ending the discussion
- Ask for final comments and questions
- Summarize your ideas
- Reflect on how the discusiion went in general
- Don’t bring up any new points
