Extensive Reading

First, we should know what is extensive reading mean?

Extensive reading means reading widely on a constant basis to develop your general reading skill, become fluent in reading, notice language patterns, and improve your vocabulary. Moreover, it requires you to read the materials that are at your level of understanding. It emphasizes the fun and enjoyment of reading in a second language.

Through the definition of extensive reading, we can see that this kind of reading is very important to develop and improve the language learner.

Being as a teacher, in order to improve Extensive Reading it is not enough to tell student to read a lot, we need to set a program that include:

• Extensive reading material

• Setting up a library

• The role of teacher in extensive reading program

• And extensive reading tasks

The first one is Extensive Reading Material

The materials here refer to written material, the book or novel that students read in their private time. (Not the textbook in academic)

One of the fundamental conditions of a successful extensive reading program is that students should read the material that they can understand.

They just read it for fun without struggling to understand every word. This is the main goal of this activity. So teachers should advise students which book is good and it readily accessible to students. Some books succeed because the writers work within specific lists of allowed words and grammar. This means that the author just use the simple or easy vocabulary and grammar so the students in appropriate level can read them with confidence and happily.

As we know, when we read something that we are interested in or we can understand what the author mention, we will feel satisfy and enjoy it very much.
