Week 1 | Introduction to the four moments of the game. (Attack, Defence, Attacking transition, Defensive transition). Theme: Counter-pressing Teaching students to recognise options. Week 2 | Theme: Turning Teach students how to turn with the ball Technique: In an area 20m x 5m. player 3 starts the exercise passing to player 2 in the middle, who performs a turn and passes to player 1. Point to note, the central player has to practice at turning in both directions. Continue the exercise with player 1 as the next starting point. Player roles can be rotated, so all three players have the opportunity to practice turning. Skill Drill: 4 teams of 3 players - two on the outside, one player on the inside of the 5 metre circle. A player on the outside passes to a colleague on the inside of the circle, who turns and passes on to the third player. It is up to the central player to move and look for space, showing good touch, and a sharp turn before delivering the ball. Week 3 | Theme: Counter Attack Skill: The team in yellow start the practice by playing the ball to any member of the white team, it is then up to the whites to counter attack swiftly past the passive yellows to finish with a shot at goal. Teams swap over Technique: In a similar area the practice starts with 3 blues playing 3 whites, both teams trying to combine to reach their two target players who operate in the zone marked T at opposite ends. On receipt of the ball the target players should recycle quickly to the opposing team who must then focus on quick counter attacking play. Week 4 | Theme: Heading, Throw ins Technique: Model technique of throwing and then heading. In pairs – pitch ball to each other and practice header Skill: Game – crossing in and players practice attacking the ball and heading Game: Same game but add in defenders who are trying to prevent the attacking header | Football boots Balls Cones Pop-up goals |
Week 5 | Theme: Marking and Covering Technique: 1 v 1 game – focusing on body position, showing toward the line Skill: 3 v 3 game which focuses on talk – man on, slide, pick up Game: 2 concurrent games of the 3 zone game where you are only allowed a maximum of 2 players per zone. Week 6 | Theme: Intercepting Technique: 4 v 1 – playing the ball through a zone. Defender must stay in the central zone and look to intercept Skill: Team Rondo – 10 v 2. Defenders are concentrating on good body position. Points are awarded in attackers can split defenders Game: 3 zone game 7 vs 3 – 3 attackers per end zone, 1 defender. Week 7 | Theme: Compactness in Defence Technique: Three teams, four players in each team. Yellow team in possession passing amongst themselves, they then attempt to play the ball through the middle team (in blue) to the whites. The blues try to stay compact to prevent this happening. To do this they need to manoeuvre as group, staying tight in relation to the movement of the ball, trying to prevent any forward progress. Skill: Progress previous game by allowing one player to press the team with the ball Game: Three teams - four players in each team.Four yellows play against the four blues with the white team occupying the target areas in each corner of the area. If yellow team successfully passes the ball to any of the players in white, then the white team recycle possession to the blues who become the attacking team.
