Say No to GMO

               GMO is the term that stands for Genetically Modified Organism. A lot of GMO foods are being sold and used in various supermarkets, schools and restaurants in the United States. As genetically modified food is speeded throughout the country, many Americans are not aware that they are eating a diet that contains GMO ingredients. GMO food should not be consumed in everyone’s kitchen due to the fact that it leads to health issues and ecosystem habitat change problems.

                First, GM foods should not be consumed because it is unhealthy to human body and causes many health problems in human’s different parts of body such as organs, immune system and gastro intestine. One of the most harmful impacts from GM foods is its use of chemical substances. ‘‘Herbicide’’ is largely used in great amounts by famers and home gardeners in order to control the weeds and cause birth defects. Since herbicides are used as weed killer in genetically modified soy sauce, people’s health is directly affected. A scientist Carrasco claims that, ‘‘ Women exposed during pregnancy to herbicides delivered offspring with congenital malformations, including microcephaly, anencephaly, and cranial malformations.’’ GMO foods also bring fertility problem besides birth defects and malformations. Based on the study made by scientists on examining Wistar rats, proves that glyphosate-Roundup discouraged the reproductive system of male rats at their youth and adulthood. Lastly, in her research works on ‘‘Different Effects Glyphosate…’’ Sophie Richard observed the ingredient of nicotinamide adenosine dinucleotide phosphate in GM products makes people’s body to grows at a lower rate in bone development, sexual differentiation that changes the hormone other and the absence of placental cells. There are great risks if people consume GM foods as the fact that the percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illness jumped through 7% to 13% after GMO introduced. Therefore, people should not consume GM foods.

                Second, GMO food should not be consumed because it causes ecosystem change on the habitat of species. While we are consuming GM products, animals and species are victims. There are evidences that GM food causes harm to native species such as honey bees. From the observation by Guy Smagghe, the number of Honey Bees has decreased a lot and other pollinators are also affected. The reason behind this is pesticides are used widely in agriculture. As bees are exposed to them, their foraging behavior is changed. Dead bees are found in large numbers because neonicotinoids insecticides are everywhere while groups of foraging bees are flying around flowers, plants and roots. Samggehe concludes that, ‘‘This indicates deposition id neonicotinoids on the flower, uptake the root system, or both.’’ The agricultural environment is no longer safe to animals as farmers now put many chemicals into crops such as insecticides and fungicides. It affects not just human health, but also animal health.
