"Thanks to" can be used both positively (as in example 1) and ironically (as in example 2).

Example 1: "Thanks to all your help, the project was smoothly run and well-received by the public."

Example 2: "Thanks to you, everyone knows it now."

(Please note: The ironic use of "thanks to" is quite common and popular in English writing as it adds power to the tone and helps to convey the writer's attitude towards a certain thing in a more subtle way.)

Students have ambiguous idea about how to use this sentence pattern. Basically, there are a few common ways of using it. Remember, the phrases "not only" and " but also" should be placed right before the emphasis as in the following examples.

e.g. John is not only obedient, but also smart and bright. (emphasis on adjectives)

Not only Peter is coming, but also his fiancé. (emphasis on nouns, people)
