The workplace has become more competitive with workers working hard to outsmart each other through education and innovativeness. Seeking further education has recently become a goal for individuals as they aggressively search for ways to remain relevant in the job market. The employees have intensively invested in education in the hopes of securing promotions and job development. The employees may suffer job dissatisfaction, because with the increased competition they are not assured of automatic job advancement. It is therefore becoming imperative for the employees to not only have a good education, but also to have a good track record and performance on the job to receive promotions.

The institutions of higher learning will not be spared by this developing trend. Charged with the duty of providing education, they experience a high demand for their services. This increase in demand for education has lead to these institutions having to develop ways to effectively provide education. The people seeking higher education are people already working for companies and therefore do not have time to attend full time classes. There is also the challenge of availability of enough space to accommodate all those seeking education.

The alternative to this in ability has been part time classes or online learning. Online learning is convenient for clients and employees who are not able to physically attend classes due to work or distance. In developed economies such as United States, online learning has become a popular mode of study for a large population of post-secondary students. A majority of these students take some or all of their courses online. The use of online learning is also common for companies who want to conduct training for their employees. In growing economies or in third world countries, online learning is gaining in popularity although the challenges of a lack of facilities are persistent.
