An individual’s identity can be described as what an individual perceives of themselves. Self-identity is a complicated attribute in a child’s healthy development because you can’t physically “do” things to children and give them their own self-identity.  An environment is created and with this environment self identity is formed (Taylor, 2012).

An aspect of self –identity that is relevant is that children gain their self-identity through both self-observation and information from their social worlds. There are a lot of influences now days that shape an individual’s self-identity. Despite all of the forces that influence self-identity, however, the family continues to be the unit most important in shaping an individual’s identity. A family is the first pack children identify with and they often can shape a child’s beliefs and choices. To fully understand ones self-identity you have to investigate all the cultures which are compromise of through your family and heritage.

A family’s culture is a unique way that a family forms its self in terms of rules, roles, habits, activities, beliefs and other areas. For example, in “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker the way there culture was developed was by working together on the land and around the house. In this story everything around them that is involved in their everyday lives and everything that was involved in the lives of their ancestors is part of their heritage. In the “Digging” by Heaney the family culture or tradition is farming. In my family one of the traditions that build our family culture is through cooking. My great grandmother taught my grandma how to cook and my grandma taught me how to cook and now my mother is teaching my 5 year old daughter how to cook. When we cook together it helps keep our family traditions alive. Family culture help build children self-identity.
