Class content

Use the book as a guide but don’t rely on it. The book can be used to introduce the target language and then supplemented with creative speaking activities. The book’s own activities are very rigid and not very enjoyable.

Lecturing

We are looking for teachers who can reduce their lecturing time and maximize students’ speaking time. If students are not familiar with a difficult grammar point or word, then try to introduce it as briefly as possible at first and add further explanations as the class progresses, rather than confusing students with a 10-minute explanation.

Corrections

Corrections are very important. When a student makes a mistake, correct them and have them repeat the whole sentence back to you. Teachers shouldn’t be scared to interrupt students: they come to our academy to learn how to speak English correctly, and giving corrections is one way of helping them to improve their accuracy.

Pair work

Teachers should expect to speak for no more than 30% of the class; the students should be the focus of the class and should speak more than they listen. Pair work is a chance to use the newly-learnt grammar or phrase in an interesting, creative way, while the teacher observes and provides corrections.

For example, the ‘articles’ activity can be made much more exciting with pair work. Teachers need to think of a creative situation in which students can use the target language. This could be a trip to Africa (What will you need? What shall we take?) or a student’s Christmas wish list (I want a ____ and an ____), etc. The more creative you are, the more engaged students will be.

For the business case study, students will need to be presented with a structured exercise. Simply saying “Tell your partner which solution you like most” isn’t structured enough
