I never knew how to site works with more than one volume before. Now I understand that if you are citing a certain page out of a volume you would type (2: 351) at the end of your sentence with the period after the parenthesis. However, if you are citing the entire volume, you would simple type (vol. 2). When it came to citing an electronic source, my high school teachers always told me to cite a page number in an online article which didn't really make sense to me since there were no pages. In the book, it says to type screens rather than pages and that makes far more sense to me.
The two most important MLA formatting rules I need to remember is in-text citations and a Works Cited page. Typically, I state whom or what I am quoting in the sentence but then forgot to use the in-text citation at the end of the sentence or quote. I will have to review my paper several times to make sure I use all of the proper citations. The Works Cited page is usually very hard to format. I understand that the Works Cited page needs to begin on a separate page from your essay, it should have the same one-inch margins and header as the rest of your paper, it needs to be labeled Works Cited and centered at the top of the page, all citations need to be double spaced, the second line of the citation needs to be indented, and page numbers need to be listed. Also, all citations must list what type of source you used such as newspaper, book, online, etc. Another point I need to remember is that all citations need to be arranged in alphabetical order by author. Thankfully someone wonderful created a site call www.easybib.com that generates citations with a few simple keywords but I should always check just to make sure everything is spelled correctly because you can't always trust ABC spell check.
