Michael Phelps: Greatest-ever Olympian?
Michael Phelps has become regarded by many countries, including the United Kingdom,
as the “greatest ever.” It has been his dedication and focus that has led Phelps to reach new
heights. As he broke world records, Phelps commented that ‘It's everything [he] ever dreamed
about. [He’s] almost lost for words.’ His accomplishments at the 2008 Beijing Olympics along
with his humble character, truly makes Phelps and all-American hero, and quite possibly a
wordly role figure for the young. Nice introduction
According to the British electronic newspaper, nice use of a signal phraseTelegraph,
Phelps “has yet to be proved right,” based on his belief that, ‘[he’s] not unbeatable, no one is
unbeatable, everyone can be beaten.’ Telegraph, as part of their report on the Olympics stars,
mentioned a few of the challengers that Phelps faced . Aside from the fact that
Phelps ‘couldn't see anything for the last 100, [and his] goggles [were] pretty much filled up
with water,’ he managed to pull through world records. It was without a doubt that Phelps
accomplished awkward statement because he wanted it ; he states, ‘I wanted to break the
world record. I wanted to go 1-51 or better but for the circumstances I guess it's not too bad.’
In order to be able to accomplish something of such ranks, you need to possess the aspirations
that Phelps clearly has well-established in his mind.
But could the Telegraph be right about Phelps being the “greatest Olympian ever”? For
one thing, Phelps did break a record that had been untamed by many in years. Mark Spitz was
the last known American (last Olympian?) to have broken a record in the number of gold
medals won through his athletic career. However, does breaking a record of bringing home an
abominable (word choice?) amount of gold truly say anything about Phelps? It does mean that
he did exceptionally well, but could he have done it on his own?
