It was a day like any other day. I did my usual routine that I do every morning before I go to school. I walked to school that day because it was a nice spring day. It was a regular day in school and I found out that the next day was Women’s Day so my advisory decided to all wear matching casual dresses. After school, I went to go buy a dress with my best friend. We found the perfect dresses and since we were closer to her house, I decided to walk her home and then walk home alone. I walked her home and it was already dark outside. My house was a couple blocks away from her house so I walked at a slow pace because I was in no rush to get home. I didn’t have my headphones so I was completely aware of my surroundings while I was walking home.

I was a few blocks away from home when it happened. I was coming up a block where there was no one around, only two guys. I wasn’t afraid because I thought my neighborhood was a safe neighborhood. I was wrong. I walked right past the guys and one of them grabbed me and covered my mouth. He put me up against a fence and he told me not to yell. He started groping me on top of my clothes but I showed no emotion, I didn’t know what to do. He let me go after a couple minutes and I didn’t process what had just happened until I saw my mother and my stepfather sitting on our front stoop. I could not stop crying. I told them I had been touched by a stranger and my step father immediately stood up, went into his car and looked for the guy. My mother called the police and I told the police a full description of how the guy looked like. They have never found him, not even until this day. I was only 14 years old when I got molested while walking home.

People in America, and all around the world, have been either sexually assaulted or raped in a high percentage, statistically. It’s not only women either, it’s men as well. In America, 29% of people who have been sexually assaulted or raped range from ages 12-17. (Department of Justice, 2010). Across many places in the world, people have been sexually assaulted as well, but, which country is the highest rape/sexual assault country in the world? If you think it’s a different country than the one you and I are living in, you are wrong. The country with the highest is us. What really matters the most is that are the people who are being sexually assaulted or raped doing something about it?
