- THESIS: Biblical allusions can be found throughout both Native American and early European literature.
- INTRODUCTION: Biblical allusions can be found within the Native American Iroquois Creation Story and also within European literature such as William Bradford’s Of Plymouth Plantation.
- The definition of an allusion is a figure of speech whereby the author refers to a subject matter such as a place, event, or literary work by way of a passing reference, and there are several ways in which an author can use this literary device.
- The Iroquois Creation story parallels the Biblical Creation Story found within the book of Genesis.
- William Bradford uses allusion to compare the European explorer’s encounters with the Native Americans to the experiences of the Apostle Paul.
- William Bradford references Seneca’s voyage as a comparison to the Mayflower.
- The Iroquois Creation story uses allusion in an indirect manner, whereas Bradford uses allusion in a direct manner, or as a reference.
- CONCLUSION: Although both written works come from two completely different points of view and cultures, Biblical allusions can be found within each piece.
